Experienced Teachers: How Common? How Much Variation?

While there is an "old guard," a substantial proportion of teachers are relatively new.

Data Source: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ds/ss/cb/filespaif.asp

  • About one in four teachers throughout the region has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the profession, with more than twenty years of experience teaching.
  • However, an even larger proportion, more than a third of teachers throughout the region, has been teaching for five years or less, indicating substantial turnover in the ranks.

Other Points (Not Shown on Chart):

  • About 15% of teachers across the region are in their first two years teaching.
  • In Los Angeles Unified School District, about 12% of teachers are in their first two years teaching.
  • Novice teachers are somewhat more common in the region outside of Los Angeles County.
  • These findings are a switch from the previous years, where Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles Unified School District showed higher numbers of novice teachers.  The graph, though, shows these two regions as having higher percentages in the 0-4 years of experience range.  Thus, one to two years ago, Los Angeles County had a large number of novice teachers who have since stayed in the area and gained experience.
