Credentialed Teachers: How
Many? How Much Variation?
The
proportion of teachers who are
fully credentialed has recently begun to increase after years of
stagnation.

- Most of the region's teachers are fully credentialed.
- About 90%, or nine out of ten teachers, have a full
teacher's credential.
- The proportion of teachers who are fully credentialed
declined as Class Size Reduction implementation continued in
the late 1990s, then began to recover slowly in 2000-2001
and 2001-2002.
- A higher proportion of teachers are fully credentialed
Outside Los Angeles County; however, the gap has narrowed in
recent years.
- About 95% of teachers outside of Los Angeles County are
fully credentialed.
- Almost 90% of teachers in Los Angeles County are fully
credentialed. The last year has seen an increase of
approximately 6% in the number of fully credentialed
teachers. A large proportion of this increase occurred
in the Los Angeles Unified School District, which saw an
increase of nearly 11%.
Other Points (Not Shown on Chart):
- About 4% of the region's teachers have emergency
credentials. This is a huge drop from the previous
year, when nearly 16% of the region's teachers had emergency
credentials.
- About 6% of teachers are in internship programs that
will give them a full credential.
- The distribution of fully credentialed teachers varies
widely among individual schools.
- The proportion of teachers who are fully credentialed
ranges dramatically from zero percent in a few schools to
one hundred percent in many others.
