Understanding Secondary School Size

Most secondary schools enroll less than 1,000 students.

  • A secondary school is defined here as a school where 90% or more of its enrollment is grades 6-12.
  • Most Five County Region schools (a little over 25%) enroll less than 500 students.
  • In the 5CR, a little over 20% of schools enroll 1000-1499 students.
  • Outside Los Angeles County has a higher proportion of small schools than large schools.
  • Los Angeles County has higher proportions of large and very small schools than small schools.
  • Like LACO, Los Angeles Unified School District has either very small schools or very large schools.

Most secondary school students attend schools with more than 1,000 students.

  • Very few 5CR students (less than 15%) are in schools with fewer than 1000 students.
  • A higher proportion of students Outside Los Angeles County attend small schools than inside LACO.
  • A higher proportion of students in Los Angeles Unified School District attend large schools than elsewhere.
